Complete Home Assistant integration for Thermacell LIV mosquito repellent systems
What is Thermacell LIV?
Thermacell LIV is an innovative smart mosquito repellent system that creates invisible zones of protection around your outdoor living spaces. Unlike traditional citronella candles or spray repellents, the LIV system uses heat-activated repellent cartridges to disperse an odorless, DEET-free vapor that repels mosquitoes within a 20-foot radius.
The LIV system includes Wi-Fi connected devices that can be controlled via the Thermacell mobile app, offering scheduling, zone control, and cartridge monitoring. However, the native app lacks sophisticated automation capabilities and doesn't integrate with broader smart home ecosystems. This is where our Home Assistant integration adds tremendous value.

Without this integration, systems operate in isolation with only basic scheduled behaviors. Home Assistant integration unlocks sophisticated automation capabilities:
Presence-Based Activation
Automatically activate outdoor mosquito protection when people are detected in outdoor areas. Integrate with motion sensors, door contacts, or phone presence detection to ensure protection is active only when needed, saving cartridge life and energy.
Example: "When back door opens and motion detected on patio between sunset and midnight, turn on patio Thermacell LIV at medium intensity. Turn off automatically 30 minutes after last motion detected."
Weather-Aware Protection
Integrate with weather data to intelligently adjust protection based on mosquito activity conditions. Mosquitoes are most active during warm, humid, low-wind conditions. Automatically increase protection intensity during peak mosquito hours and reduce or disable during unfavorable conditions like high wind or cold temperatures.
Example: "When temperature above 60°F, humidity above 50%, wind below 10mph, and outdoor motion detected, activate all outdoor Thermacell devices at high intensity. If wind exceeds 15mph or temperature drops below 55°F, turn off devices (mosquitoes inactive)."
Smart Event Coordination
Coordinate mosquito protection with outdoor events, entertaining, or activities. Create scenes that activate appropriate zones based on calendar events, manual triggers, or voice commands. Integrate with outdoor lighting, music systems, and other smart home devices for comprehensive outdoor entertainment experiences.
Example: "When 'Backyard BBQ' scene activated, turn on all patio and lawn Thermacell devices, activate outdoor string lights, start patio speakers, and send notification when all zones are active. Pre-activate 15 minutes before calendar event starts."
Cartridge Management & Alerts
Proactively monitor cartridge levels across all devices and send notifications when replacements are needed. Track usage patterns to predict when cartridges will run out and automatically add replacement cartridges to shopping lists or trigger reorder workflows. Prevent situations where devices run out of repellent during active use.
Example: "Monitor all Thermacell cartridge levels. When any device drops below 20%, send push notification with device location and add 'Thermacell Refills' to shopping list. When below 10%, send urgent notification and flash living room lights. Track monthly usage and predict next replacement date."
Seasonal & Dawn/Dusk Scheduling
Create sophisticated schedules that adapt to changing daylight hours and mosquito seasons. Automatically activate protection during peak mosquito activity times (dawn and dusk) with schedules that adjust as sunrise/sunset times change throughout the year. Reduce or disable automation during winter months when mosquitoes are dormant.
Example: "During mosquito season (April-October), automatically activate backyard Thermacell devices 30 minutes before sunset through 2 hours after sunset if temperature above 65°F. Also activate at dawn (30 minutes before sunrise to 1 hour after) on weekends. During winter months (November-March), disable all automations."
Installation & Support
Easy Installation
The integration can be installed through HACS (Home Assistant Community Store) for one-click installation, or manually via GitHub. Configuration requires your Thermacell account credentials used with the official Thermacell mobile app.
